Some thoughts...

The pictures taken after the iconic "Tank Man" are not seen as often. This is the extent people in power are willing to go to maintain power and for "them" crypto must be controlled by any means necessary.

Tanks versus bicycles and unarmed pedestrians, mostly students.

Sickening, but could happen in other places too.

Let no-one believe that other governments - Western governments - aren't capable of exactly the same brutality.

The world has changed.

In 1989 the Chinese government massacred hundreds of their own people, and then went on to convince much of their own population that it didn’t happen.

In 2019 a HK police officer pepper-sprayed some reporters, and 20 minutes later half the planet had watched videos of it from 3 different angles.

That’s why the HK protests have gone on this long, and why we won’t see tanks rolling in this time. It’s not that they aren’t technically capable of that brutality. But they aren’t capable of keeping any sort of lid on it anymore.

The world has not changed.

Only the ability to disseminate information about such lamentable atrocities. Unfortunately, that's not enough to prevent said atrocities by a determined dictator. The world watched Maduro's tanks run over unarmed Venezuelans. He is still in power. The ultimate law in the universe is force, and if citizens have no viable way to throw off an overly oppressive regime then it's just lambs to the slaughter. This is the real reason for the Second Amendment in the United States. It never had anything to do with "hunting".

The people of Venezuela were disarmed of what few guns they had. I think the people of Hong Kong have always been disarmed. Unfortunately, asking nicely and throwing tantrums about matters of freedom and independence are unlikely to get far.
